The former American Idol star won the fan-voted award over fellow AMA honorees Dan + Shay (nominated for their self-titled album) and Kane Brown (nominated for Experiment).

Underwood owned more than voters' favorite country album and the red carpet, earning Favorite Female Artist-Country over award show regulars Kelsea Ballerini and Maren Morris.

Underwood's Favorite Album- Country competition also brought home awards. Brown won Favorite Male Artist- Country over Luke Combs and one of the evening's performers, Thomas Rhett. Dan + Shay picked up both Favorite Song- Country for "Speechless," edging out a couple of year-defining hits in Combs' "Beautiful Crazy" and Blake Shelton's "God's Country,"  and Favorite Duo/Group- Country over Florida Georgia Line and Old Dominion.

In other country music-related news, "Old Town Road" collaborators Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus continued their awards show haul with a Favorite Song-Rap/Hip-Hop trophy, while Taylor Swift's big night included Favorite Artist- Adult Contemporary, Favorite Artist-Pop/Rock and Favorite Music Video (for "You Need to Calm Down") wins; Artist of the Decade honors and a career-spanning medley featuring special guests Halsey and Camila Cabello. By the end of the night, Swift upped her career total to a staggering 29 AMA award victories.

As a side note, only artists with ties to country music have won Artist of the Decade honors. Garth Brooks picked up the win for the '90s, and no one got the nod for the 2000's. Michael Jackson won an award even grander in scope, Artist of the Century, in 2002.

It's also worth noting that Combs and Lil Nas X, along with fellow popular stars Lizzo and Ella Mai, lost New Artist of the Year to multi-Grammy award nominee Billie Eilish.

The 2019 AMAs, broadcast Nov. 24 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, also spotlighted living legend Shania Twain with a medley beginning with nods to Post Malone and Drake before incorporating some of the biggest hits of the past 30 years by any pop or country artist.
