Dolly Parton’s '9 to 5 The Musical' is Headed to London's West End

From Jan. 28 through Aug 31, 2019, 9 to 5 The Musical will hold a limited run at London's Savoy Theatre. Based on the 1980 film, 9 to 5 The Musical features a Tony-nominated score penned by Dolly Parton and a book (providing narrative structure) by Patricia Resnick.

In 2009, the first staging of 9 to 5 The Musical opened on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in New York. It closed quickly in September of the same year, yet it was nominated for four Tony awards and 15 Drama Desk Awards. In 2010, the musical took to the road on a U.S. tour followed by an opening in London in 2012. Produced by Robert Greenblatt, the original production was recorded, and it will be re-released on Parton's imprint Dolly Records/Sony Music now that excitement is bubbling up over the new production featuring songs such as "Heart to Hart" and "Shine Like the Sun."

Of course, Parton also famously starred in the hit movie 9 to 5 as Doralee Rhodes. Natalie McQueen will add her own touch to the role in the new London musical with the help of Tony-nominated director Jeff Calhoun who lead the U.S. touring production. Musical supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations will be taken care of by Mark Crossland, and musical direction by Andrew Hilton.

Rounding out the London cast is Louise Redknapp as Violet Newstead (played by Lily Tomlin in the film and Allison Janney in the original staging), along with Amber Davies as Judy Bernly (played by Jane Fonda in the film). Brian Conley will take on the role of Franklin Hart, the office's sexist boss whose female coworkers exact revenge upon after growing fed up with his chauvinistic ways.

Those who can make it out to the West End can buy tickets from the digital box office starting Sept. 18. In addition to the London run, a production of the musical will also be held in Scotland at the Edinburgh Footlights in Spring 2019.
