McEntire's rendition of "Somehow You Do," featured in the motion picture Four Good Days, starring Glenn Close, Mila Kunis and Stephen Root, is nominated for Best Original Song.
This marks the country music superstar's return to the Oscars stage as a performer. Back in 1991, she performed "I'm Checkin' Out" from the movie Postcards From the Edge.
For McEntire, the return to the Hollywood stage is an emotional one. In 1991, she performed at the ceremony just days after she lost her band members in a plane crash.
"I was very emotional [Wednesday] about the Oscars, because I said 'yes' to the Oscars in '91 and then the plane crash happened," McEntire said (quote via Good Morning America). "And then I went ahead and sang the song because I felt [road manager] Jim Hammon talking to me, saying, 'Go do it for us. We're checked out of this heartbreak hotel.'"
The actress and singer said reflecting on her performance in '91 has been challenging in the days leading up to this year's Oscars performance.
"And so I finally figured it out yesterday," McEntire said. "I thought if I got to excited, something could happen. So I said, 'God, I'm just gonna give it up to you,' and it lifted like a hundred pounds. We went to rehearsal and I had a great time."
Who Wrote 'Somehow You Do?'
"Somehow You Do" was written by Diane Warren, who will receive the Oscar if the song wins. This is Warren's 13th Oscar nomination, with her latest nominated songs being "Io Si (Seen) from Netflix's The Life Ahead, "I'll Fight" for RBG, "I'm Standing with You" from Breakthrough and "Stand Up for Something" from Marshall.
"Even if I wasn't singing it, I'd hope Diane would win because she's such a talented writer," McEntire said. "What a gift she has."
Following the announcement of the nominations, McEntire took to social media to celebrate Warren, posting a photo of them both.
"Congratulations to Diane Warren on her #Oscar nomination for "Somehow You Do"! Thanks for allowing me to be a part of another one of your beautiful creations," she wrote.
McEntire had first revealed the song and music video last year. Other songs nominated in the Best Original Song field are "Dos Oruguitas" from Encanto, "Be Alive" from King Richard, "Down to Joy" from Belfast and "No Time to Die" from No Time To Die.
McEntire is one of four artists (along wihBillie Eilish and Finneas, Beyonce and Sebastian Yatra) scheduled to perform the songs nominated in the category.
The singer took to Instagram to announce her performance, captioning the photo, "I'm honored to be performing "Somehow You Do" written by @dianewarren at this year's 94th #Oscars. Tune in Sunday at 8/7c on @abcnetwork."
The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 27 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood in Los Angeles. It will be broadcasted live on ABC at 8 PM ET.
