Is Slice of Sauce the Ketchup of the Future? See It to Believe It

Imagine a world where you didn't need to cart around jars of traditional condiments anytime you wanted to pack a picnic. Or packing a part-empty bottle of ketchup in your office lunch. Or where soldiers in the field or astronauts on the Space Station could easily put ketchup or BBQ sauce on their food.

That's the world the folks at Bo's Fine Foods are building. They're running a Kickstarter campaign for Slice of Sauce. The slice is basically ketchup in a convenient and mess-free package, and it's also shelf-stable (meaning no refrigeration is required and it's good for a year). Oh, and the ingredients are non-GMO, gluten-free, and all-natural with no artificial flavors, preservatives, or high-fructose corn syrup.

Now, sliced ketchup may sound unnecessary, or even frivolous. But think about putting the kids' lunches together without having to deal with sticky mess of a bottle. Or road trips where you don't have to try and spread ketchup with a plastic knife (while hopefully someone else is driving).

There are also genuinely helpful applications for ketchup slices in professions where a kitchen isn't readily available, like remote military bases or hospitals.

And the idea seems to be a hit. The Slice of Sauce Kickstarter project launched on March 6 and reached 50 percent of their funding goal by March 7. By March 23, the campaign was fully funded and now it's gone over the funding needed by almost $6,000.

Founder Emily Williams and co-founder Thac Lecong are behind the idea. Williams, who is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, created the sauce slices when she was experimenting with recipes her restaurateur father gave her.

The company's website notes that the slices are not individually packaged.

We are deeply concerned about the plastic pollution problem. Because we are still in development, we are working tirelessly with our food safety team to find the most sustainable and low impact packaging possible, while providing you with a trustworthy product. This includes compostable and recyclable materials. Cool packaging to us means being responsible and doing our part to protect our planet and your families.

The money raised in the Kickstarter campaign will be used to fund the initial production run of the product, including making the product, packaging it, and shipping it. They expect to start delivering the product in June of this year. So the real question is, will you try sliced ketchup?

We've reached out to Bo's Fine Foods for comment and will update the post when we hear back.
