Patagonia Is Getting Into the Food Game, Delivering More Than Food

Gear junkies, foodies, and everyone concerned with eating more sustainably prepare yourself for what I'm about to say, Patagonia has officially launched a food line. That's right, the clothing company known for their outdoor apparel and environmental efforts is getting into the responsibly sourced food game one bite at a time with their line Patagonia Provisions.

Many have the impression of outdoorsy food being nothing but Cliffs Bars and instant meals that leave something to be desired. Patagonia is breaking that perception. Offering flavorful responsibly sourced goods, they are going beyond the food is fuel ideology and embracing the culture of food.

The line feature foods like buffalo jerky, Lummi Island wild salmon, organic nut bars, 100 percent certified-organic breakfast grains,  non-GMO meat- and dairy-free soups like red bean chili, and even their beer collaboration Long Root Ale that was done with Hopworks Urban Brewery.

They're also offering up some mouthwatering recipes to go along with it just in case you needed a little more inspiration. This isn't just backpacking food, this is dinner.

The taste of instant meals isn't the only mold they're breaking. When discussing their decision to branch out, Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard explained that it's about change, or rather, being the positive change they want to see in the food industry. With their mission statement the same,

"We aim to make the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, and perhaps most important, inspire solutions to the environmental crisis,"

the climate change focused line is their answer to revolutionizing the food industry. Chouinard's explains how we are overgrazing prairies, pumping livestock with antibiotics, and are essentially creating a food chain crisis.

With greenhouse gas emissions on the rise and unsustainable agricultural practices partly to blame, Patagonia is looking to find more responsible methods of feeding an ever growing population. Through the old and the new, they are determined to find the best practices and turn them into the new norm.

While they certainly have their work cut out for them, for now you can enjoy some of their fare at PatagoniaProvisions.com.

If you're interested in learning more about the line, hop on over to their website and watch the short film Unbroken Ground.
