You might want to grab your own knife and cutting board if you have a hankering for some sweet melon. According to the latest announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, pre-cut melon manufactured by Caito foods has been voluntarily recalled due to a salmonella outbreak concern. Fresh cut watermelon, fresh cut honeydew melon, fresh cut cantaloupe and fresh cut mixed fruit containing one of these melons have been recalled since finding potential salmonella Carrau at the Caito Indianapolis factory.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has so far linked 93 illnesses due to the pre-cut melons. The products are found in in clear, plastic clamshell containers and distributed to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Stores involved in the recall include Walmart, Whole Foods, Target, Kroger, and Gordon Food Service.

Since there is a possibility that these products may still be on store shelves, the FDA is recommending that consumers in the states listed above steer clear from buying pre-cut melons.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious illness in children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. On a rare occasion, the organism can make its way into the bloodstream and produce arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
