Have you ever wondered which U.S. state has the highest overall incomes? The Washington Post has answered that mystery by using census data to create a thought-provoking new map that shows just how much wealth divides our country.

Northeastern states like Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland all make the top of the list. Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Utah, Colorado and Minnesota also have a median annual income that's greater than $67,000.

The next tier contains states like Texas, California, Illinois and Nebraska, to name a few. The families living in these states are maintaining a healthy lifestyle of a $58,000 to $67,000 annual income. Further down the list are Kansas, Missouri, Arizona and Nevada, with an annual income of $54,000 to $58,000.

It's probably not surprising to learn that pretty much the entire South and a lot of the Midwest fall into the lowest bracket of less than $54,000. New Mexico also falls into this category.

According to the Post, the difference in some of these states is pretty staggering. For example, Mississippi is so far behind when it comes to revenue that the average annual income is less than what New Hampshire's was in 1997. That is one reason over 20% of those living in Mississippi are below the poverty line.

So, where does your state rank?
