Carrie Underwood fans woke up early this morning to catch the release of her new song, "Cry Pretty," and it doesn't seem like anyone is disappointed. If you pull up next to someone belting out lyrics while crying in their car in the next few weeks, it's safe to assume they're singing: "You can pretty lie/And say it's okay/You can pretty smile/And just walk away/Pretty much fake your way through anything/But, you can't cry pretty."
In the song, written by Underwood, Hillary Lindsay, Liz Rose and Lori McKenna, Underwood is lamenting on the pressure to keep composure and not make a scene nor express too much of oneself. While keeping emotions at bay, protecting oneself and plastering on a happy face can work for a while, the emotions have to come out sometime and vulnerability is inevitable, "so let it flow like a river."

As many people would suspect, the lyrics could also reflect Underwood's recent fall that left her with a facial injury and a broken wrist. But with broader lyrics, she leaves the song up to interpretation for the listener. "It really speaks to a lot of things that have happened in the past year and I hope when you hear it, you can relate those feelings to those times in your life," she stated.
"Cry Pretty" Lyrics:
I'm sorry
But I'm just a girl not usually the kind to show my heart to the world
I'm pretty good at keeping it together
I hold my composure, for worse or for better
So I apologize
If you don't like what you see
But sometimes my emotions get the best of me
And falling apart is as human as it gets
You can't hide it
You can't fight
But the truth is
You can pretty lie
And say it's okay
You can pretty smile
And just walk away
Pretty much fake your way through anything
But, you can't cry pretty
Oh no, you can't dress it up in lace or rhinestones
Don't matter if you're in a crowd or home alone
Yeah, it's all the same when you're looking in the mirror
A pinch or a pain
So let it flow like a river
You can pretty lie
And say it's okay
You can pretty smile
And just walk away
Pretty much fake your way through anything
But, you can't cry pretty
You can't turn off the flood when the dam breaks
When all your mascara is going to waste
When things get ugly
You just got to face you can't cry pretty
Oh, no, you can't
You can't turn off the flood when the dam breaks
When all your mascara is going to waste
When things get ugly
You just got to face you can't cry pretty
