"August 7th I'm having brain surgery in Houston because of my Parkinson's disease," he wrote." It will help me walk better. August 21st will be the 2nd part of my brain surgery. I will then go back 2 weeks later and get a battery put in. I'm doing this all because I'm having problems walking. I will be fine. I'm asking for prayers. God gave me the talent and I plan on using it until the day I die. Thank you!"
After years of playing bars throughout Texas, Lee formed a professional relationship in the 1970's with Mickey Gilley, on the road and at the famous Gilley's Club in Pasadena, Texas. Both performers became stars due to soundtrack cuts from the 1980 movie Urban Cowboy. Lee's hit from the film, "Lookin' For Love," established his crossover appeal and kicked off a short yet lucrative run of singles, including five number ones in as many years: "One in a Million," "Bet Your Heart on Me," "The Yellow Rose" featuring Lane Brody and "You Could've Heard a Heart Break."
Like many country stars on the wrong side of changing fads, Lee continued touring well beyond his years of chart success. Since 2008, he's been a regular performer in Branson, Missouri. Even after his Parkinson's diagnosis last summer, the singer remained part for the nostalgia-fueled scenes in Branson and on cruise ships. In the coming months, the 73-year-old performer will take part in an Urban Cowboy Reunion Tour with Gilley.
He's also remained a recording artist. His most recent album, You Ain't Never Been To Texas, was released in 2016.
