Robin Wright Finds Healing In The Vast Wyoming Wilderness In New Film 'Land'

Robin Wright has proven time and again that she is a force to be reckoned with. Ever since the early days in her career playing Princess Buttercup in The Princess Bride, she has gone on to play a slew of powerhouse female characters. Wright received a Golden Globe award for playing Claire Underwood on Netflix's House of Cards in addition to countless nominations during the show's 5-year run. In a role like we've never seen her in before, Wright will be starring in the movie Land which will also be her feature film directorial debut.

Wright plays Edee Mathis who retreats to the Rockies after losing her husband and son and seeks healing from the comfort of nature. On the brink of death, she is saved by a local hunter named Miguel (Demián Bichir). With his help, Edee must learn how to live her life again. Kim Dickens co-stars as Edee's sister Emma in this poignant story written by Jesse Chatham and Erin Dignam.

Land made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and will be formally released by Focus Features on Friday, February 12. Produced by Allyn Stewart, Lora Kennedy, Peter Saraf, and Leah Holzer, the story of a young woman finding herself in the tough terrain of Wyoming seems like it will be incredibly powerful. Dare we say, an Oscar contender?

"I was definitely looking for material to direct once I got off House of Cards," Wright explained to EW.

"And this one came to me. [Producer] Alynn [Stewart] said, "I don't know why. I watched your episodes that you directed on House of Cards, and I just felt you'd be perfect for this movie, to direct it." And it was so beautiful, because the message was about resilience, in the movie. And resilience to me means opening yourself up to something new, a new belief system, and finding faith again."

Though this is Wright's first film, she's definitely not a first-time director. After directing episodes of House of Cards, she's used to directing scenes she's already in.

As you watch the trailer you'll see that Miguel has gone through a similar loss to Edee, making him the perfect person to help bring her back to life.

"He went through exactly what she went through, so he knew the stages that she needed to endure. He says, 'You were in my path, and I was meant to help you.' And I just thought, what a beautiful message about human kindness and friendship, that we, I think, now really want to feel, because there's been so much ugliness in the last four years," Wright says. "People being mean and cruel and bullying, and all the negative effects of that. And I just wanted to make something hopeful and kind."
