Charles Kelley's Emergency Appendicitis Surgery Forced Lady A to Cancel Festival Gig

A medical emergency over the weekend forced country trio Lady A to cancel their first show back since the widespread return of festivals and tours: a Saturday night (July 10) set at the Lakefront Music Fest in Prior Lake, Minnesota.

The cancellation was necessary after Lady A's Charles Kelley got rushed to the hospital with appendicitis.

Kelley shared an update and hospital bed selfie on Sunday morning.

"Hey guys -- sitting here in the hospital and so bummed to have missed performing our first show back in Minnesota, not to mention in 16 months -- that's an understatement," Kelley wrote on social media. "But the ol' appendix had other plans. Didn't even know what an appendix was until Friday when it sent me to the ER. Love y'all and be back soon enough."

The country music festival made up for Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott's absence by extending the set times for Noah Guthrie and Jake Owen. Its announcement of the lineup change promised a Lady A appearance at Lakefront Music Fest 2023.

Lady A's fresh off the June 25 release of studio album What a Song Can Do (Chapter One). Its What a Song Can Do tour is scheduled to begin later this month. The trio's fellow 2021 Grand Ole Opry inductee, Carly Pearce, is among the opening acts.

Fans have waited much longer than 16 months for this one. It's Lady A's first headlining tour since 2017 and its first arena and amphitheater tour since 2018.

"We are gonna soak up these moments on stage more than we ever have before," Kelley said in the press release announcing the tour. "It's gonna be hard to wipe the smiles off our faces and I'm sure the tears off of Hillary's. We were lucky enough to still release new music this past year but there are songs like 'Champagne Night' and 'What If I Never Get Over You' that we haven't been able to play live much so we know those will make for some really special moments."
