Garth Brooks Gets First No. 1 Since 2007 with 'Ask Me How I Know'

No stranger to the top of the country music charts, having another No. 1 single may not seem like that big of a deal for a powerhouse like Garth Brooks (he's had 20 and counting). Garth Brooks is, after all, one of the top grossing artists of all time. Following his 2014 world tour and selling millions of tickets to his 2019 stadium tour, one thing is certain: the man is an American icon in country music and is here to stay this time.

Since the More than a Memory singer's big return to Nashville after a 13 year hiatus, Garth Brooks has managed to keep himself current in a radio world dominated by major label acts and young guns. Of all his recent songs, what makes his 20th number one song, "Ask Me How I Know" significant?

To start, it was his first No. 1 single as an independent artist. Brooks launched Pearl Records for himself and wife Trisha Yearwood. Even cooler, "Ask Me How I Know" hit No. 1 the same week as his very first No. 1 single, "If Tomorrow Never Comes," all the way back in 1989.

The song was written by Mitch Rossell, marking his first major cut in country radio. (Rossell was also the opener for Brooks on his world tour). Brooke performed "Ask Me How I Know" at the 2017 CMA awards where he was also awarded his sixth Entertainer of the Year award.

Most notably, this song marks Brooks taking the country music scene on his own terms. New albums may come but this will forever remain a classic in his repertoire of Billboard toppers. So baby, let's lay down and dance to this new Garth Brooks classic.

"Ask Me How I Know" Lyrics

You're stubborn as they come, you'll never settle down
You'll always be the one who doesn't stick around
You make all the rules, you're set in your ways
You gotta have your freedom, you gotta have your space

Cause one day you'll meet the girl you swore you'd never find
Start feeling things you never felt and spending all your time
Trying to figure out how she got this hold on you
And when you start to fall, you'll hold onto your pride
Start building up your walls and never let her get inside
You'll push her away 'cause that's all you know how to do
And then she'll leave and you won't beg her not to go
Ask me how I know

Go on and shake your head and tell me that I'm wrong
Say, "I'm just another fool and this is just another song"
But I know how you are 'cause I know how I am
And I'd give anything to go back and try again

Cause one day you'll meet the girl you swore you'd never find
Start feeling things you never felt and spending all your time
Trying to figure out how she got this hold on you
And when you start to fall, you'll hold onto your pride
Start building up your walls and never let her get inside
You'll push her away 'cause that's all you know how to do
And then she'll leave and you won't beg her not to go
Ask me how I know

And you best put this song on repeat
Maybe then you won't end up like me

Cause one day you'll meet the girl you swore you'd never find
Start feeling things you never felt and spending all your time
Trying to figure out how she got this hold on you
And when you start to fall, you'll hold onto your pride
Start building up your walls and never let her get inside
You'll push her away 'cause that's all you know how to do
And then she'll leave and you won't beg her not to go
Ask me how I know

Ask me how I know
Cause man I know
