Carlile announced the festival in 2018, calling it a "weekend holiday in Mexico celebrating women in rock and roll."
In a statement on her website, the Americana singer-songwriter addressed the inequality on many festival lineups and expressed her pride in having a lineup of all female artists.
"Mainstream festivals in the US habitually exclude women as headline artists equal to men. I was brought up by Lilith Fair to believe that men and women enjoy live music equally and that women can not only headline a festival - they can BE a festival. I'm proud to announce that our festival has an ALL female fronted lineup," Carlile wrote. "I would absolutely LOVE to see a ton of men there supporting women in rock and roll, I want to see mothers with children, single people, LGBTQ brothers and sisters letting it all go for a weekend together in harmony (with bottomless tequila on hand to assist)."

The lack of women headliners at music festivals has been a hot topic of discussion for both artists and music fans. In 2018, Pitchfork reported that female artists made up only a quarter of the total artists booked for 23 of the summer's major festivals. The Twitter account Book More Women has brought further attention to the issue by removing the names of male artists on festival posters, highlighting the absurdity of how few women are booked.
In a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone Country Carlile said she hopes Girls Just Wanna Weekend shows festival bookers what they're missing when they exclude women. She also addressed the importance of providing a safe environment for female fans. (A 2017 survey conducted by the OurMusicMyBody campaign found that 90 percent of surveyed female concertgoers had been sexually harassed at music festivals and venues.)
"Festival buyers and people booking festivals are missing the truck because what I hope Girls Just Wanna Weekend will show is that there are women [fans] who are staying home, whose money spends the same as their male counterparts, because the top of that festival is all men and it's not calling to them because they don't feel represented musically," Carlile told Rolling Stone Country. "They're worried about toxic masculinity, being hit on and surrounded by drunk guys. Look, [drinking] is part of festival life. But if there were two or three women in those spots, they would know they are represented."
The inaugural all-women music festival Girls Just Wanna Weekend lineup included Maren Morris, Margo Price, Indigo Girls, Patty Griffin, Lucius, Ruby Amanfu, the Secret Sisters and KT Tunstall.
