West Virginia-based singer-songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin carries on the respected tradition of story telling of his native Appalachia on his debut album Seneca (out on February 15). The 26-year-old artist, who's shared bills with Tyler Childers, Shooter Jennings, Aaron Watson, Colter Wall and more, started singing after being cut from auditions for the West Virginia University football team. Turns out, that failed audition was kismet.

Godwin displays his sincerity, emotional depth and warm vibrato in the live performance video of his soul-searching tune "Here in Eden," which Wide Open Country is premiering today.
"I don't mind placing bets on the dirt beneath my feet/ I won't mind laying to rest any doubt that you may keep," Godwin sings. "Are you awake or are you sleeping? Are you fixing or are you breaking? Are you staying or are you leaving what I'm building here in Eden?"
The son of a West Virginia coal miner, Godwin's songs are rooted in old-world melodies and modern struggles. Fans of Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson should take notice of Godwin.
