"I'll have one McDonald's breakfast burrito please," I speak into the drive-thru microphone. It's 8 am and I have an appointment at 8:30 all the way across town. Most of the time I make a leisurely breakfast at home before starting work for the day, but today was a different story. The dog and cat were fighting and my alarm never went off. I needed something portable and fast and that wasn't out of my way to grab. The McDonald's right before the interstate was the perfect solution.

Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, however with a busy lifestyle, waking up extra early to prepare your own dish is sometimes impossible. Cereal is easy to make but it lacks that oomph of protein most people need to get through the workday. Thankfully fast food restaurant drive-thrus exist and make grabbing breakfast flavorful and fast. One notable breakfast menu has to be McDonald's. The Egg McMuffin and the McGriddle are classics but I always tend to grab a McDonald's sausage burrito when I'm in a big rush.

Filled with fluffy scrambled egg, American cheese, chopped green chilies, breakfast sausage crumbles, onions and wrapped in a flour tortilla, the sausage burrito is a great alternative to breakfast sandwich because of its portability. Introduced in 1991 for 99 cents, the McDonald's breakfast burrito has always been a hit.
Along with being delicious, the burrito is healthy and nutritious, with 310 calories, 25 carbs, and 17 grams total fat in one serving size. The other nutrition fact involves 7 g saturated fat, 1 g dietary fiber, 0 g trans fat, 170 mg cholesterol, 10% daily value calcium and 4% daily value of potassium. The only downside is the 800 mg of sodium, but overall the breakfast burrito is a healthy way to start the day.
I admit, I sometimes crave the burrito when I'm not in a rush out the door. In those times I make my own at home and let me tell you, it tastes just like the real thing.
How To Make a McDonald's Breakfast Burrito at Home
To start the copycat recipe, gather all of your ingredients. Everything you need can be purchased at your local grocery store. No adding gourmet elements like shredded cheddar cheese or adding unnecessary veggies; save those for your frittata.
In a large skillet brown your pork sausage with a tablespoon of oil, making it nice and crispy. Remove from the heat and drain off extra fat. Add in the onion, green chilies, and chopped tomatoes and cook vegetable mix until cooked through.
Warm the tortillas in the microwave by wrapping in a damp paper towel.
Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine milk and eggs and beat to combine. Cook egg mixture in a small pan over medium heat until cooked. Set aside.
Assemble the burritos by placing a slice of American cheese in the middle followed by the egg and sausage mixture. Roll up and serve alongside salsa and if you are wanting a big breakfast, some hashbrowns.
