The best part of this chocolate cobbler is the juicy cherry filling. It's a great use for all the fresh cherries that you'll find at the farmer's market during the summer months but it works with frozen or canned cherries just as well. When shopping for cherries, the most common ones you will find are Bing and Rainier cherries which are the dark and sweet kind of bright red, tart cherries such as Morello or Montmorency.

Either one will taste delicious in this cobbler, whether you use dark and sweet, bright and tart, or a combination of both. Just be sure to adjust the amount of sugar based on the type of cherries you use.

This chocolate cherry cobbler is best when served warm right from the oven, however, if needed it can be made ahead of time and then baked. To store, cover and refrigerated for up to five days. When ready to serve, just reheat it in the oven or serve at room temperature.

  • Serve topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a decadent dessert.
  • This recipe uses pralines but you can try sprinkling with almonds, walnuts, or any type of nut you prefer.
  • For an ultra chocolate taste, you can use 70% extra-dark semi-sweet morsels or for a less intense flavor, use semisweet, milk chocolate, or even white chocolate.
  • If you are using fresh cherries and don't happen to have a pitter around the house, removing the pit is easy by simply cutting the cherries in half and popping out the pit that way.
  • Once you have this chocolate cherry cobbler down, try it with some of your other favorite fruits. This recipe works amazingly well with blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and peaches too.
