Displayed across the 11-acre field are the words "Your Life Matters" and the contact info for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). John and Julie Govin were sadly inspired by the idea after experiencing this loss when their own family member committed suicide.
"The idea immediately popped into our heads. In fact, it was on the way to the funeral that the idea popped into our heads that maybe we could do a suicide prevention maze," John Govin told CNN.
The annual corn maze brings in a large portion of income for the Govins and each year's theme is different. In the past, the design of the maze has centered around various things including the Green Bay Packers, Garth Brooks, Alzheimer's, and even the Boy Scouts. The family was a bit worried about using this platform to talk about such a sensitive topic but were plenty surprised by the amount of positive support they received, and the maze hasn't even opened yet.
"My wife was at work yesterday, and she said she couldn't get anything done because she works for a large employer and she says people were constantly coming into her office to thank her or to relate a story that they have," Govin said. "It's truly remarkable."
Make sure to stop by the maze when it opens on September 21. The Govins plan on donating a portion of the proceeds to suicide prevention groups to play their part. They really hope that this entire initiative helps save other families loved ones from thinking that suicide is the answer and first calling the hotline number for help. Govin is one important person for using his livelihood to try to help others. We need more people like him in the world.
