David Fincher's New Netflix Thriller 'The Killer' Looks Like 'Se7en' Crossed With a Bond Movie

Fincher's collaborator from 'Se7en' even wrote the screenplay.

Director David Fincher's highly anticipated crime thriller The Killer, starring Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton, is coming to Netflix on November 10 after a limited theatrical release starting October 27.

It's the first film for Fincher (The Social Network, Se7en, Fight Club) since 2020's Mank and is born from a fruitful relationship between the Academy Award-nominated director and Netflix, which includes the psychological crime thriller Mindhunter, the political thriller House of Cards, and the science fiction anthology series Love, Death + Robots. The official synopsis for the film from Netflix reads: "After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers and himself on an international manhunt he insists isn't personal."

The hype train is already running at full speed -- and for good reason. The trailer, which shows quick cuts of Fassbender performing all manner of Bond-esque stunts while ominously muttering his mantra "Stick to the plan" over and over, has racked up over 9 million views on YouTube in a week. And the premiere at the Venice Film Festival was received with a standing ovation.

The Killer is based on the French graphic novel series of the same name, written by Alexis 'Matz' Nolent and illustrated by Luc Jacamon. It remains unclear whether Fincher has made any changes to the graphic novel, but in the source material, the main character frequently embarks on international manhunts and clashes with his employers. The upcoming film will depict the titular character grappling with the repercussions of a failed assignment, with indications that The Killer himself might serve as the narrator.

Actors Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, and Sophie Charlotte will join Fassbender and Swinton in the thriller, which will clock in at a runtime of 1 hour and 53 minutes.

Andrew Kevin Walker, who last collaborated with Fincher on their breakout hit Se7en, wrote the film's screenplay.
