The Payson Pro Rodeo takes place every third week in August in the town of Payson, Ariz. The small-town tradition has been taking place for 133 years. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) sanctions the event.
Professional cowboys and cowgirls come from all over the world to compete in the rodeo for up to $50,000 in total. Events include bronc riding, specialty acts, bull riders and steer wrestlers. Of course, some of the best clowns in the business also participate in this one-of-a-kind rodeo.
The rodeo got its start back in 1884 with the help of Abraham Henson Meadows. Just a few of the local ranchers participated during the earliest days, but it didn't take long for the rodeo to grow significantly. Over the years, the organizers added more events as well. For example, roping, riding and racing have always been a part of the rodeo. However, barrel racing, specialty acts and even a rodeo parade soon followed.
One of the great things about the rodeo is the funds all go to charity. The organizers of the rodeo go on to support a ton of charitable organizations throughout their county. To keep things affordable, many of the workers are volunteers. Sponsors also help pay for the funds needed for a fantastic rodeo.
This year, the rodeo takes place Aug. 17-19. Special prices are available for the military and a family day happens on Saturday. Families can get special prices for the day.
