Broadway Musical Based on Reba's 'Fancy' in the Works

Well, it never hit No. 1 on the charts, but the song "Fancy" has earned its own Broadway musical. The dramatic song about a teenager turned lady of the night became one of Reba's most famous songs. "Fancy" also gave Bobbie Gentry, who penned the tune, one of her earliest hits.

According to Broadway World, the musical has its first developmental lab presentations this March. Those are essentially low cost, early stage performances that focus on the story and music.

"Fancy" uses the lyrics of the iconic hit for inspiration. The musical follows 16-year-old Fancy, a poor Louisiana girl tossed to the street by her ailing mother.

But Fancy's dreams and musical ambitions eclipse her downtrodden life. As the press release for the play asks, "Can we learn from the past misdeeds of others or are we doomed to continue the cycle?"

The score features a whole gaggle of chart-topping hits from country music's brightest stars. In addition to Reba and Gentry, music from Garth Brooks, Loretta Lynn, George Strait, Johnny Cash, Carrie Underwood, Ray Charles, George Michael and more appear in the musical.

Some of those classic songs include "Redneck Woman," "Before He Cheats" and "Hit The Road, Jack."

"Fancy is a new American musical that brings together some of the all-time greatest crossover country songs on stage with some of the theatre's brightest talents," producer Margot Astrachan says. After the presentation, the team hopes to partner up with additional producers for an eventual national run.

The team is holding three performances over March 16 and 17.

Reba released "Fancy" on her 1990 album Rumor Has It. The tune helped keep her album in the Top 10 for 26 weeks. Her music video for the song also told the story in greater detail.

Gentry's version of the song earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
