Season 5 will officially premiere on November 21, 2023. The black comedy crime drama series returns after a three-year gap since season 4 and has been teased with the questions: "When is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn't yours?"

Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh have been cast as lead characters Roy Tillman, Dorothy "Dot" Lyon, and Lorraine Lyon, respectively. Additional cast members include Stranger Things fan-favorite Joe Keery as Gator Tillman, Lamorne Morris as Witt Farr, Richa Moorjani as Indira Olmstead, Dave Foley as Danish Graves and David Rysdahl as Wayne Lyon.

Set against the backdrop of Minnesota and North Dakota during 2019, the season traces the journey of Dorothy "Dot" Lyon (Temple). Dot finds herself entangled with the authorities due to a chain of unexpected events, thereby thrusting the apparently ordinary Midwestern homemaker back into a life she believed she had moved beyond.

The critically-renowned Fargo series takes place in the same fictional universe as the Coen brothers' 1996 cult classic film of the same name. The show is heavily inspired by various films from the sibling writer-director duo, and their distinctive style is evident in everything from narrative to tone to camera work. Each season is set in a different location and era with a mostly different cast of characters.

The series has been nominated for 226 awards since its first season debuted in 2014. Cast alumni include Billy Bob Thornton, who won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film, Colin Hanks, Chris Rock, Allison Tolman, Martin Freeman, and Ewan McGregor. Thornton, Tolman, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Jean Smart also won Critics Choice Awards for their turns on the series.
