There's good news for fans of the twisted mother-daughter dramedy Ginny & Georgia after being left on a wicked cliffhanger at the end of the second season.
The modern play on Gilmore Girls is returning for a third AND fourth season! Unfortunately, though, they likely won't debut anytime soon.
The double season renewal is not especially surprising, as it quickly became one of Netflix's biggest hits. The first two seasons both peaked on the streamer's all-time most-watched list. And fans devoured the second with more than 180 million hours watched, knocking the smash hit Wednesday off Netflix's top spot.
The Emmy-nominated global sensation Ginny & Georgia follows the quirky Miller family as they try to adjust to life in a small town in New England called Wellsbury. Spunky and irresistible Georgia (Brianne Howey) is a single mother who had her first child, Ginny (Antonia Gentry), at only age 15 and has been on the run ever since.
Now, Ginny is an anxious teenager herself and has to come of age in the white-majority town they finally settled in all while balancing the stress that comes with boys, friendships and high school. Plus, she comes to discover her mother has a seedier past than she realized. It's the perfect cocktail of teenage angst mixed with juicy family drama.
Without giving too much away, the finale of Season 2 left fans in shock as they watched the whole Miller family question their future in Wellsbury.
So, what do we know about the third season? Will it pick up where Season 2 left off? And who's returning from the cast and crew? Here's everything we know:
Production
As of fall 2023, production for Season 3 (and 4) of Ginny & Georgia has not started yet. Hollywood writers and actors have been on strike since the summer, and there's no end in sight to the walkouts yet.
Once the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild reach new contracts with the major Hollywood studios and streamers, scripts will likely still need to be finalized before filming can start.
Ginny & Georgia is one of the dozens of Netflix movies and shows that have been impacted by the dual strikes.
When Can We Watch?
Despite the extremely juicy Season 2 ending, fans won't get to find out what happens next for the Miller family for a while.
Netflix announced the third and fourth season renewals on May 17; and, as we know, filming has yet to start. That means Ginny & Georgia's next installment likely won't debut until late 2024 or even 2025.
As of now, no release date has been announced for either of the upcoming seasons.
Cast & Crew
Netflix has yet to release an official cast list for the third season of Ginny & Georgia. But we can assume that a number of our favorite wild characters will be back.
Netflix posted a video announcing the third season featuring many of the show's stars who offered some hints into what's next for their characters.
The show's titular costars will obviously be back to reprise their roles in their topsy-turvy mother-daughter relationship. And we're sure Diesel La Torraca will be back as Georgia's son and Ginny's younger brother, Austin.
Plus, with Season 2 leaving fans on a massive cliffhanger involving Mayor Paul, we know Scott Porter will definitely be back for Season 3.
And we're sure Cynthia — portrayed by Sabrina Grdevich — will also make an appearance in the next installment following her husband's murder.
Felix Mallard, who plays Ginny's brooding and complicated love interest Marcus, was also featured in the Instagram video. Even if Marcus and Ginny ended their relationship in the last season, they're still neighbors. And we have no doubt the two will still be in each other's lives.
The neighborhood wouldn't be complete without Marcus' sister and Ginny's best friend, Maxine — played by Sara Waisglass — as well as Marcus and Max's mom, Ellen, played by Jennifer Robertson.
Plus, Katie Douglas and Chelsea Clark — who play Abby and Norah, the rest of Ginny's friend group MANG — teased plenty more girl drama in the video announcement.
And in a clue of what's to come in the next season, Raymond Ablack, who plays Blue Farm Cafe owner Joe, promises "a lot of drama" and "a lot of love triangles."
While not confirmed — and not featured in the Instagram Reel — we're also sure a few other Wellsbury staples won't miss out on any of the next season's drama.
Zion, Ginny's father — played by Nathan Mitchell — made a serious effort to get back into Ginny's life, so he'll likely pop up in the third season. Plus Austin's dad, Gil, played by Aaron Ashmore, made a serious attempt to be more involved in his son's life in the second season. While Paul seemed to have scared him from doing anything drastic, it's unclear if the Millers have actually rid themselves of Gil for good.
And Ginny & Georgia loves to include dramatic flashbacks of Georgia's chaotic upbringing. So Nikki Roumel, who plays a young Georgia, and Kyle Bary, who plays a young Zion, are sure to make an appearance in the next season as well.
As for the crew, one major behind-the-scenes role is getting a fresh face. Deadline revealed that Sarah Glinski is replacing Debra Fisher as the showrunner for the upcoming seasons. Glinski is best known for her work leading the popular spinoff Degrassi: The Next Generation.
What Will Season 3 Entail?
Wedding bells and police sirens were both ringing at the end of Ginny & Georgia's second season when it cut to black, leaving fans in absolute shock.
Ginny spent the whole season trying to come to terms with the fact that her mother murdered her stepfather in order to protect her. The end of the season finally shows Ginny trying to make amends with her chaotic mother by setting up a last-minute wedding ceremony for her.
But the season ends after Georgia is hauled away in a cop car — wedding dress and all — only minutes after marrying Mayor Paul.
She was arrested for the murder of Cynthia's husband Tom, who had been in a vegetative state for most of the season. But in a first for Georgia, it was actually a mercy killing rather than a way for her to exit a bad situation.
Now fans must wrestle with a myriad of burning questions until the third season premieres. But luckily, the show's creator, Sarah Lampert, says they've been planning for the next installment since the series began. She says the characters will get thrown "new hurdles, new relationships and new challenges" when the show returns "in a way we haven't seen before on the show."
She told People prior to the second season that the writers knew where they wanted to take the show in Season 3, and "all of the dominoes have been set up as far as season 1." In fact, the writers developed the storyline for Season 2 with the next installment in mind, which meant Georgia needed to kill someone in Wellsbury.
Former showrunner Fisher told The Wrap that they know "the end game" for Season 3 and even teased the Miller family getting to reunite. "The Millers are on the same team now, they're a united front, and that's interesting; we've never seen that before."
Though no specifics have been confirmed, there are some definite threads that Season 3 will have to pull.
Primarily, what will happen with Georgia in jail? Lampert says the show may look a little different now: "[Georgia] was a woman who was a superhero at what she did, and now she's been caught," she said. "It's almost like Superman got taken down."
With Georgia behind bars, who will look after Ginny and Austin? Their newly minted stepfather, Paul, may step up to the role. Ginny's father, Zion, could make himself a more permanent fixture in their lives. Or Austin's abusive father could try to worm his way in again.
Plus, will Paul reach his breaking point with Georgia? In the second season, the fiery Southern belle revealed all of her dirty laundry to her then-fiance — and we mean ALL. That obviously didn't sit well with him, but he does love her and decided to still marry her in the finale. But now that she's been arrested, can the mayor of Wellsbury stay with a murderer? Or will he finally be done with Georgia's madness?
And if Paul is out of the picture, that could open the door for romance to spark between Georgia and Joe. After all, we know Joe has basically been in love with Georgia since she was a teenager and is the reason she fled to Wellsbury in the first place.
Ginny has also been struggling with love and ended up breaking up with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Marcus during the second season. After all, they were both dealing with a LOT of insane family drama and mental health crises. But fans will have to tune in to Season 3 to see if that romance has been shut down for good.
Lastly, will the show's namesakes, Ginny and Georgia, be able to reconcile their often-strained mother-daughter relationship with Georgia behind bars?
As we all wait eagerly for the third season of Ginny & Georgia, we'll just have to rewatch the first two on Netflix in the meantime.
