Goldfish Crackers Recalled In Regard of Recent Salmonella Scare

The outbreak of salmonella is holding strong with our favorite cheesy snacks and treats. Most recently Pepperidge Farm has recalled their Goldfish Flavour Blasted Xtreme Cheddar Crackers due to possible salmonella contamination. This recall comes only days after Ritz crackers announced their voluntary recall after their distributor of whey was concerned of a salmonella outbreak.

It seems that all of these recently recalled products all have something in common: whey. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert concerning the whey powder and food products that may have been in contact. Just like Miss Muffet who was eating her curds and whey, whey powder is the powdered form of the by-product of cheese or casein. In the instances of the crackers the whey powder is an essential ingredient in processed cheese products.
On top of the goldfish crackers recall, a public health alert is in effect for one product produced by Pinnacle Foods Inc. The frozen meal contains they affected whey powder in the ranch dressing seasoning which is combined in the mashed potatoes. The recall is as follows:
  • 15.25-oz. individual frozen microwavable dinners with "HUNGRY MAN CHIPOTLE BBQ SAUCED BONELESS CHICKEN WYNGZ" printed on the label and bearing a best buy date of 9/6/19.

Although there have been no illnesses in connection with these products, the items are still under recall as a precautionary measure of salmonella risk. The recall covers all of the United States as well as Canada. If consumers have any questions that may "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov or via smartphone at m.askkaren.gov.
