Smith delivered the unthinkable news on Thursday (June 6) via social media.
"Following a tragic accident, and despite doctor's best efforts, (River) was unable to be revived," Smith wrote. "Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life. Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father. Riv was special. Everyone that met him knew that immediately. The joy he brought to our lives cannot be expressed and his light will be forever in our hearts. If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment. Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this."
Per People, River's death was due to a drowning accident at home.
River is survived by his father and mother, Amber, and older sister London, 7, and big brother Lincoln, 5.
As usual, the country music family wasted no time taking care of its own, with other stars tweeting condolences for the Smith family.
"Thoughts and prayers with Granger Smith and his family," wrote Brandy Clark. "Such a nice and humble guy every time I've ever been around him and you hate for anyone to be going through something like this, but especially someone like Granger."
"I am so, so sorry," wrote Lauren Alaina. "We will make a donation in his honor and will encourage our friends to do the same. Sending all my live [sic] and prayers."
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations to Dell Children's Medical Center, a hospital serving Austin, Texas and its surrounding area, in River's name.
