The beloved announcer was scheduled to appear at Rodeo Austin later this month. He got his start unexpectedly when he filled in for another announcer at a Nebraska rodeo in 1960. Barrett later acted as the voice of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo for 28 years.
"Hadley had the unique ability to explain idiosyncrasies of rodeo to those less familiar with the sport - he intimately knew the resume of the contestants, would explain the scoring system and even knew the demeanor and habits of the bucking stock," a statement from the San Antonio Rodeo said in a statement. "With kindness and humor, Hadley was an amazing professional - he had the capacity to maintain the same high level energy and engagement for 21 consecutive performances."

In 1999, Barrett was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. He also had a cameo in the 1994 film 8 Seconds which followed the life of American rodeo star Lane Frost.
Representatives for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo told MySanAntonio that Barrett would be "deeply missed by all."
