With his single "You Make it Easy" sitting at the top of the charts, Jason Aldean has released a follow up single featuring fellow country music superstar Miranda Lambert.
Written by Jeff Middleton, Josh Thompson and Brandon Kinney, "Drowns the Whiskey" is a classic country heartbreaker about a man trying in vain to drown the memory of a past relationship.
"Whiskey's supposed to drown the memory/ I've gone from one to one too many," Aldean sings with Lambert on harmony vocals. "And the thing that really gets me is how your memory drowns the whiskey."
It's telling that Aldean chose to release the most traditional-sounding song on Rearview Town as a single. It's not often that you hear a steel guitar solo on a track sent to country radio these days. Beyond the sonic similarities to country's roots, the track harkens back to songs by country legends --from Merle Haggard to Vern Gosdin-- that explored turning to vices in an attempt to stomp out a heartache. The addition of Miranda Lambert's vocals takes the song to another level, making "Drowns the Whiskey" an early standout among the year's mainstream country releases.

This isn't the first time Aldean and Lambert have collaborated. The two teamed up for the song "Grown Woman" on Aldean's 2007 album Relentless.
Jason Aldean released his latest album Rearview Town in April. He's currently on tour.
Miranda Lambert will kick off The Bandwagon Tour with Little Big Town on July 12 in Charlotte, N.C.
"Drowns the Whiskey" Lyrics:
All the folks down in Lynchburg, Tennessee
Been workin' hard for the good ol' boys like me
I don't wanna be the one to tell 'em
All that stuff that they've been sellin'
Ain't workin' like it should
But I damn sure wish it would
Whiskey's supposed to drown the memory
I've gone from one to one too many
And the thing that really gets me
Is how your memory drowns the whiskey
Maybe it's the bar or the stool I'm on
Maybe it's the band and this sad ol' song
That keeps me buyin' rounds
That keeps me turnin' down any girl that wants to dance
You ain't givin' them a chance
Whiskey's supposed to drown the memory
I've gone from one to one too many
And the thing that really gets me
Is how your memory drowns the whiskey
Girl, I'm livin' proof that 80 proof
Ain't got a shot at touchin' you
(Repeat chorus)
All the folks down in Lynchburg, Tennessee
Been workin' hard for the good ol' boys like me
