Story Behind the Song: George Strait's Faith-Filled 'I Saw God Today'

George Strait's "I Saw God Today" became the country star's 43rd number one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The single off of his 2008 album Troubadour also debuted at No. 19 on the charts, which was the highest of his career. Written by songwriters Rodney Clawson, Monty Criswell and Wade Kirby, the song does an incredible job of describing the simple ways you can see God in everyday life.

Criswell had the initial idea for the concept of the song. When he would come home from his hunting trips, he would say "caught a glimpse of God today" even if he didn't see any animals. That turned into a list of more ways you can see God and eventually, a full song emerged.

Strait told The Boot that he thinks the song serves as a reminder to us all to just take a step back and take everything in.

"'I Saw God Today' is such a well-written song ... It means a lot," Strait said. "Sometimes we take a lot of things for granted, especially anybody that's had a child. When they first see that child -- if they're in the delivery room or not -- it truly is a miracle. And you just realize that all of these things that God has given us ... sometimes you just take for granted. But if you just step back and take a look around, you'll see what beauty we have around us in the things that He has created for us."

The song received a Dove Award nomination for Country Recorded Song of the Year and was Single of the Year at the 2008 CMA Awards

Producer Tony Brown told The Christian Beat why he thought the country music song resonated so well with listeners.

"I think it spoke to what a parent feels when they have a baby," Brown said. "It shows how deep and important the moment a baby is born is, and it spoke to both moms and dads."

"I Saw God Today" Lyrics

Just walked down the street to the coffee shop
Had to take a break
I've been by her side for eighteen hours straight
Saw a flower growing in the middle of the sidewalk
Pushing up through the concrete
Like it was planted right there for me to see

The flashing lights
The honking horns
All seem to fade away
But in the shadow of the hospital
At 5:08
I saw God today

I've been to church
I've read the book
I know He's there
But I don't look
Near as often as I should

His fingerprints are everywhere
I just look down and stop and stare
Open my eyes and then I swear
I Saw God Today

Saw a couple walking by
They were holding hands
And she had that glow
Yeah, I couldn't help
But I noticed that she was starting to show
Stood there for a minute
Taking in the sky
Lost in that sunset
A splash of amber melting into shades of red

I've been to church
I've read the book
I know He's there
But I don't look
Near as often as I should

Got my face pushed up against the nursery glass
She's sleeping like a rock
My name on her wrist
Wearing tiny pink socks
She's got my nose
She's got her Mama's eyes
My brand new baby girl
She's a miracle
I Saw God Today
