Brandi Carlile Performs John Prine's Final Song in Moving Grammy Tribute

Brandi Carlile paid tribute to the late folk singer-songwriter John Prine during the 2021 Grammy Awards. Carlile, whose band The Highwomen won the Grammy for Best Country Song (for "Crowded Table"), sang Prine's posthumously released "I Remember Everything," which won two Grammy awards earlier on the day of the broadcast (March 14).

"I Remember Everything" is the final song Prine ever recorded. The song won the Grammy for Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance. Prine's widow and former manager Fiona Prine, along with their sons, accepted the awards.

"The music community in Nashville and beyond, your love and encouragement has meant the world to us this past year," Fiona Prine said. "And to the fans, you span several generations now. Thank you for supporting and continuing to promote John's words and music in the world."

Prine died on April 7, 2020 at age 73 following a bout with COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Carlile's tender performance was part of an In Memoriam segment, which also featured a Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak) tribute to Little Richard and Lionel Richie honoring his late friend Kenny Rogers. Singer-songwriter and Alabama Shakes member Brittany Howard also performed "You'll Never Walk Alone," accompanied by Coldplay's Chris Martin on piano.

Carlile shared a sweet message for the late Americana and country music hero at the end of the performance.

"We all thank you, John -- for everything," she said.
