Maddie & Tae waited longer than most to release new music since their breakthrough debut album Start Here. But for fans of the duo, the wait is probably well worth it. They just released new single "Friends Don't," and it's a solid track from start to finish.

It's a tale plenty of people relate to. In the song, the pair sings about all the things friends don't do — but probably not in the way you'd assume.
"Friends don't call you in the middle of the night/couldn't even tell you why/they just felt like saying hi," the pair sing in the chorus. It's a myriad list of all those little things people who are "just friends" wouldn't normally do. "We do, but friends don't," they sing.
It's a cool twist on that frustrated feeling of being somewhere between friendship and something more. Check out the catchy tune below.

"Friend's Don't" is the first single since Maddie & Tae signed with Mercury Nashville. The band lost their record deal in 2017 when Dot Records closed down, which understandably left them a little shaken.
The duo used that insecurity in writing their upcoming sophomore record, and it's apparent even on this first single. Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye co-wrote the song alongside Jon Nite and Justin Ebach.
"It feels so good to be back with a song like 'Friends Don't,'" Dye says in a press release. "This song is everything we've always been. Honest, vulnerable and confident. We can't wait for our fans to hear the rest of the record."
"We have a big story to tell on this album, and 'Friends Don't' is the beginning of it all," Marlow adds.
So far, we don't know when that record comes out. But we do know "Friends Don't" is scheduled to go out to country radio starting May 14.
