Although he's his own man as an artist, Lukas Nelson proudly embraces the legacy and music of famous dad and occasional bandmate Willie Nelson. A recent appearance on WSM Country Radio drives this point home. It also proved the younger Nelson's improvement after years of global touring with his band Promise of the Real and hobnobbing with Lady Gaga and Neil Young.

Lukas covered "Funny (How Time Slips Away)," a song recorded by his dad in the same room back in 1961. The song had a bit of a renaissance lately, with the late Glen Campbell recording a duet with Willie for farewell album Adios. That version won the 2017 CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year, putting both a great song and two fathers of modern country in their rightful spotlight.

The video drives two points home. One, in case you haven't noticed, Willie has really talented kids. Lukas has his own gentle yet commanding voice that allows him to celebrate his dad's work without sounding like a tribute act. Two, songs from when the Family Band's elder statesman only got his due as a writer really stood the test of time. This particular composition works as both a farewell for Campbell and yet another reminder that Lukas Nelson is here to stay.
