Did You Know You Can Make Pickles in Your Coffee Maker?

When I saw this headline land on my desk this morning I had more questions than I had time to ask. I'm a pickle lover through and through (just give me a kosher dill and I'm all set) but I could not wrap my head around making your own pickles using a coffee maker.

I get the concept and it makes sense. The coffee maker boils the water for the brine, then the boiling water is brewed through the coffee pot and then let to sit for a few hours in the fridge. It's the basic principal of preparing a brine and then soaking the cucumbers.

If this is the case, you can brine pickles in almost anything. In fact, here's three different household appliances you can make pickles with.

1. The Slow Cooker

The slow cooker has become an all-in-one cooker in my kitchen. From baking bread to making soups and stews, the slow cooker is the perfect appliance to make homemade pickles with.

To a slow cooker, add 3 cups of water and 1/2 cup of sugar. Set to high and let cook until sugar is dissolved. Once dissolved, add in the 2 cups of vinegar and season with 1 Tbsp whole mustard seeds, 1 Tbsp whole coriander seeds, 4 sprigs fresh dill and 1 Tbsp of salt.

Add in about 2 cups of sliced Persian cucumbers and stir to combine. Remove the slow cooker insert and place in the fridge to cool for 2-3 hours. Strain and serve.

2. The Tea Kettle

Using the same methodology as above, add the water and sugar to an electric tea kettle and bring to a boil. Once boiling, add in the vinegar, seasonings and sliced cucumbers. Let sit one hour, then transfer to a container and chill for another hour more.

I can't recommend how good this is for your tea kettle.

3. The Microwave

Lastly, the microwave is a great appliance to make pickles with. Using a large microwavable safe container, combine the water and sugar and place in the microwave until dissolved and boiling.

Stir in the seasonings and cucumbers and place in the refrigerator to brine for 2-3 hours. Want to try out the Coffee Maker Pickles?
