Among the surprises at the same Newport Folk Festival (July 27-29) that included a Jason Isbell and David Crosby duet was Margo Price and Brandi Carlile's spirited singalong of the Dolly Parton classic "9 to 5."

As shown during a three-night stand at the Ryman Auditorium in May, the singer, songwriter and guitarist behind Midwest Farmer's Daughter and All American Made makes the most of special guests. At those shows alone, she appeared on stage with Sturgill Simpson, Lukas Nelson, Emmylou Harris and Third Man Records boss Jack White. Considering Tyler Childers was her opening act at the time, it's no surprise that Price often uses her platform to further expose talented singer-songwriters that don't necessarily fit the Nashville mold.
Carlile, a well-rounded talent in her own right, helped light a fire under a crowd that was already braving the summer sun. The duo's song choice reminds fans that Americana singer-songwriters are among the many musical and social offspring of Dolly's legendary ascent from a life of poverty in East Tennessee to a spot among living country singers that's only rivaled by Loretta Lynn and Price's weed-smoking buddy Willie Nelson. Festival goers also got to see Price sing with another legend when she performed "In Spite of Ourselves" with John Prine.
