If you watch sports on television, you're probably very familiar with The Masters theme song. You don't even have to follow the PGA Tour to know it because the smooth, piano-based tune gets lots of airtime on CBS during the network's SEC football and NFL coverage.

It turns out that Dave Loggins, a third cousin of Kenny Loggins and the country and pop songwriter behind "Please Come to Boston," not only composed the soundtrack for Augusta National. The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member also wrote lyrics about the Augusta, Georgia course's storied history.
Loggins penned the song, officially titled "Augusta," following his own tee time at the golf tournament's hallowed site.
"I stopped for a minute, looked up at the pine trees and the wind down there was just different in some regards," Loggins told the Associated Press in a 2019 interview (as quoted by Golf Digest). "Spiritually it was different. That course was just a piece of art. I looked over at some dogwoods and, man, I just started writing the song in my head which is what I do when I get inspired. I had the first verse before I even got off the course."

Loggins wrote the song in 1981. A year later, executive producer Frank Chirkinian adopted it as part of CBS Sports' annual coverage of The Masters.
Nowadays, the song's synonymous with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and other stars to chase that iconic green jacket in the years since inspiration struck Loggins on the course's par-4 14th hole.
As for Loggins' country music bonafides, his songs have been recorded by Tanya Tucker ("You've Got Me to Hold On To," "Comin' Home Alone"), John Conlee ("Something Special") and Alabama ("Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)").
"Augusta" Lyrics
Well, it's springtime in the valley on Magnolia Lane
It's the Augusta National and the master of the game
Who'll wear that green coat on Sunday afternoon?
Who'll walk the 18th fairway singing this tune?
Augusta, your dogwoods and pines
They play on my mind like a song
Augusta, it's you that I love
And it's you that I'll miss when I'm gone.
It's Watson, Byron Nelson, Demaret, Player and Snead
It's Amen Corner and it's Hogan's perfect swing
It's Sarazen's double eagle at the 15 in '35
And the spirit of Clifford Roberts that keeps it alive
Augusta, your dogwoods and pines
They play on my mind like a song
Augusta, it's you that I love
And it's you that I miss when I'm gone.
It's the legions of Arnie's Army and the Golden Bear's throngs
And the wooden-shafted legend of Bobby Jones.
