The McMansion
The McMansion in New Hyde Park was built in 1795 for Joseph Denton, whose family includes some of the earliest settlers on the Cumberland River. In the 1860s, the Denton House was then converted to a Georgian-style mansion. As time went by, the gorgeous mansion was used as a funeral home and a variety of different restaurants. By the late 1900s, the building had fallen into disrepair. McDonald's acquired it in 1985, planning to demolish the eyesore and create a classic McDonald's restaurant out of it.
Instead, the residents of North Hempstead and New Hyde Park sought historic designation, battling for three years before coming to an agreement with McDonald's. The restaurant was allowed to create an addition to the back of the house for a drive-thru, but the front would be resigned to match its 1920's appearance. The gorgeous mansion now features hardwood floors, the original portico, and a double staircase that leads to a dining area on the second floor. These renovations paid off, as Insider eventually came across the McMansion and proclaimed it to be the most beautiful McDonald's in America!
The McMansion was remodeled again in 2017 when it was renovated to conform with McDonald's design standards while keeping its historic appearance. This involved updating the woodwork, flooring, and restroom, along with adding digital menu boards and self-order kiosks.
