'Outer Range' Cast: Who's Starring in Season 2 of the Sci-Fi Neo-Western

Something's lurking in the sunbaked acres that make up the Abbott ranch — and the battle is on to uncover what superterrestrial power lies among those Wyoming plains. The mystery behind Amazon Prime's newest science-fiction, neo-Western drama Outer Range captivated audiences when it premiered in April 2022 with its heady mix of rural drama, spiritual exploration and secrets lurking in a hidden corner of the wild, wild West.

The show follows the Abbotts, a family of Wyoming ranchers reeling from the disappearance of their daughter-in-law, Rebecca, when they meet a peculiar drifter named Autumn (Imogen Poots). After her arrival, they discover a mysterious black void in one of their pastures that challenges their way of life and the forces that lie behind it — all while having to protect their land from a rival family who wants it for their own unspoken reasons.

In October 2022, Prime Video announced that Outer Range would be renewed for a second season, with actor Charles Murray taking over for the show's creator, Brian Watkins, as showrunner. Without giving away any spoilers, it's safe to say that the season 1 finale left viewers with a lot of unanswered questions.

As the Abbott family continues their journey of discovery and survival, let's take a look at the cast of Outer Range and who is returning for season 2.

Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott

Josh Brolin plays Royal Abbott, a brooding and strong-willed family man just trying to protect his loved ones and his land while also grappling with the fact that there's a gaping hole in the space-time fabric right there on his property. No big deal. Despite Royal's connection to the void becoming increasingly pivotal, as snippets of his enigmatic backstory emerge, he tries desperately to keep its existence a secret.

In real life, Brolin is a well-known and accomplished actor in the film industry. He has a wide range of roles in his filmography, from dramatic to comedic, and has received numerous accolades for his performances. Some of his notable awards include a Screen Actor's Guild Award for Outstanding Performance in No Country for Old Men, a Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 2014 neo-noir mystery comedy Inherent Vice, and an MTV Movie & TV Award for his iconic portrayal of Thanos across various Marvel films.

"I never want to do anything straightforward," he told Variety. "I find it boring. This felt like a major swing and it had all the room to fail, and I like those odds."

Lili Taylor as Cecilia Abbott

Lili Taylor plays Cecilia Abbott, Royal Abbott's wife. She holds a pivotal role when it comes to holding the Abbott family together. As the owner of a ranch that has been in her family for generations, she wants nothing more than to preserve it, thus shooting down any attempts to sell it. Her relationship with Royal is complicated, as she turns to religion for comfort while he distances himself from it.

She called her character "innovative and resilient" in an interview with Parade, adding that she has "a live-and-let-live attitude, which is kind of a grace, in a way."

In real life, Taylor has a career spanning three decades. Fans may recognize her from her roles in popular movies such as The Conjuring and The Evening Hour, as well as her appearances in critically acclaimed TV shows including American Crime and Six Feet Under, for which she received Emmy award nominations.

Lewis Pullman as Rhett Abbott

Lewis Pullman plays Rhett Abbott, the younger son of Royal Abbott, and a local bull rider. He gets into a violent fight with rival rancher Trevor Tillerson and eventually ends up in hot water when his brother, Perry, kills Trevor. With that, the Abbott brothers try to cover up the evidence of their murder while Royal acts to protect his sons by disposing of the body by throwing it into a time-travel void just in case you're wondering what kind of person Rhett is.

He told Bleeding Cool that he was drawn to Outer Range because the setting reminded him much of his childhood. "I grew up going to Montana a lot and working on a ranch. I know a lot of guys like Rhett and like that family. So it felt like going home in a lot of ways."

Outside of Outer Range, Pullman is an actor known for his work in films such as The Strangers: Prey at Night and Bad Times at the El Royale. Recently, he starred in the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise, further solidifying his status as a prominent Hollywood star.

Tom Pelphrey as Perry Abbott

Tom Pelphrey plays Perry Abbott, Rhett Abbott's older brother and the father of Amy. He regularly finds himself struggling with the unsolved disappearance of his wife, Rebecca, and still believes she may one day return. He simply isn't able to accept that the case is closed, and he still wears his wedding ring. When he meets Autumn Rivers, however, he grows closer to her and the two form a bond.

He told Looper that Outer Range "is definitely the weirdest show" he's ever been on, adding: "It did not feel like being on a TV set most of the time."

In real life, Pelphrey is known for his portrayal of Ben Davis in Ozark and Ward Meachum in Marvel's Iron Fist. Both performances were praised by critics and audiences alike, and helped to establish him as a prominent voice in the industry. Pelphrey also starred in the biographical drama film She Said in 2022, and he was praised for his ability to add depth to his character's personality.

Imogen Poots as Autumn Rivers

Imogen Poots plays Autumn Rivers, a character who's more complex than she initially appears. Little is known about her hidden purpose within the Abbott family. Her backstory is not fully revealed, but as the story progresses, she becomes further entangled in Royal's secrets. She also becomes more determined about eventually unearthing the mysteries of the black hole. At the same time, she continually causes conflict for Royal, both physically and emotionally, when she takes it upon herself to reveal the void's existence to his family.

Poots told The Wrap in an interview that she was drawn to the series because she "thought it was really cool," and enjoyed the challenge of learning more about her character as they filmed each episode. She admitted: "I was very aligned with her quest to also find out more."

In the real world, Poots has a wide range of experience in the film and television industry. She's starred in a number of films, including the 2020 drama The Father and the international sci-fi flick Vivarium. Additionally, she's made appearances in a number of TV shows, most notably with her lead role in the American comedy-drama Roadies.

Will Patton plays Wayne Tillerson, the rancher who lives next door to the Abbott family. The only thing he's more interested in than taxidermy is taking over the Abbotts' land. He has his own ideals and machinations as to why he does what he does, but he's always in the way when it comes to the Abbotts accomplishing anything at all. We saw Wayne pass away in season 1, but it's always possible that he comes back in a flashback or potentially in some other aspect. Who knows what that black void is really capable of?

The real-life Patton is a renowned actor with a career spanning decades. He's appeared in the massively popular Yellowstone; horror films Halloween and Halloween Kills; and the 2020 film Minari, for which he received a Spotlight Award at the Middleburg Film Festival for Best Ensemble Cast.

A lifelong servant to justice, Deputy Sheriff Joy is a force to be reckoned with and is played by Canadian actress Tamara Podemski. She recently appeared in a few episodes of the hit FX on Hulu show Reservation Dogs, but you may also remember her from television series such as Coroner and Unsettled.

She said her character's goodness initially drew her to the script. They really wanted her to be the light in the dark, and that attracted me to her," Podemski told Inverse. "I do love playing those kinds of heroes, those moral compasses."

Noah Reid as Billy Tillerson

The Abbotts' enigmatic neighbor Billy Tillerson — who can't help but sing — is played by Toronto-based actor Noah Reid. You may recognize him from his work as Patrick Brewer in the hit comedy series Schitt's Creek and his character Marshall Wheeler on Strange Days at Blake Holsey High. Last we saw Billy, he was getting run down by a herd of buffalo, so it's unclear if he lives to see another day in season 2.

Shaun Sipos as Luke Tillerson

Vengeful and ready to fight for his family, Luke Tillerson is the oldest brother of the Abbotts' rival family and brings a much more sinister presence to the series. He is played by Canadian actor Shaun Sipos, who has appeared in films such as Final Destination 2 and TV shows including Krypton.

Olive Abercrombie as Amy Abbott

Rounding out the core cast is Amy Abbott, the daughter of Perry and the now-disappeared Rebecca. She is played by Atlanta native Olive Abercrombie, a child actress who is new to the scene and making waves with her heartfelt performance. You may recognize her from her role as Abigail in the Netflix miniseries The Haunting of Hill House.
