When you think about ordinary, unglamorous, but totally necessary kitchen tools, what comes to mind? Do spoon rests and pot holders make the list? How about mundane pieces of cookware and kitchen utensils like soup pots or a ladle? Does a high-quality potato peeler ever cross your mind?
I am virtually always thinking about potatoes. Mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, baked and roasted potatoes. Potato chips and potato pancakes. Shoot, I'm basically like the Bubba Blue of taters. I'm particular about my spuds, so you better believe that when it comes time to peel potatoes, I need a heavy-duty device with a sharp blade to help me out. I take the peeling process seriously.
I'm happy to see so many online potato lovers do too.
Best Potato Peeler of 2021
OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler
- $11
- Nonslip ergonomic handle
- Dishwasher safe stainless steel blade
- 4.8/5 stars on 29,969 Amazon reviews
I went in search of the top-selling potato peeler on Amazon, and I should have known it was from kitchen gadget makers OXO. From salad spinners to cheese graters to y-shaped veggie peelers, OXO has been making exceptional utensils and tools since 1990. Funny enough, the company's first product was a swivel vegetable peeler with a straight blade. Thirty years later and that same style of sharp edge is at the top of the potato peeler charts.
As reviewer P. Spragins says, nothing peels as well as this little knife:
Jade Kroll has been cooking a lot of veggies lately, and they want you to know that P. Spragins isn't alone when they say that this peeler can shave anything:
OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler
OXO's stainless steel peeler has a lot going for it, despite being such a tiny tool. Fancy electric potato peeler, this is not. The manual blade is delicate enough to use as a fruit peeler or an apple peeler, but it's also tough enough to carve up sweet potatoes. Plus, there's a built-in corer to remove blemishes like potato eye. Definitely do this before you boil, bake, or fry your wonder tubers.
Apart from being super functional, this $11 peeler is well designed too. The handle is made of soft, nonslip rubber that feels comfortable in hand. Plus, the bottom of this handle has a small hole, so you can hang it in the pantry or stash it in your kitchen drawers.
So far, it seems like the only downside is that OXO doesn't sell replacement blades. For $11, you might not need them. This peeler has left piles and piles of reviews, and I'm already collecting all the recipes I can find for scalloped potatoes, souffle spuds, and sweet potato pie.
OXO has an awesome, high-quality collection of spiralizers, slicers, y-peelers, and julienne peeler set that you can find on Amazon today. Outfit your kitchen with the right gear, and start cooking up your favorite root veggies and tubers today!
