Mai Tai

Mai Tai

This traditional Mai Tai recipe draws inspiration from Trader Vic's with a few homemade twists, like trading in the cocktail shaker for a closed mason jar.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 1 drink

Ingredients

  • 1 oz dark rum
  • 1 oz light rum
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1/2 oz Triple Sec
  • 1 drop pure almond extract
  • Sprinkle of brown sugar
  • Dash of grenadine
  • Maraschino cherries, for garnish
  • Orange slices, for garnish

Instructions

  • In an 8-ounce mason jar, combine all ingredients except for the grenadine, the maraschino cherries, and orange slices.
  • Cap the mason jar and shake well, until the cocktail is frothy and worked into a frenzy. You can choose to drink it from the jar, or pour it into a special glass. We've tried it both ways, and both are equally tasty.
  • Add a dash of grenadine if you wish. Garnish with cherries and oranges, or enjoy sans fruit!

Notes

All measurements are in ounces because most mason jars have ounce markers on the side of the glass. If you need a conversion, remember that one ounce is two tablespoons.
Traditionalists will agree that Orgeat syrup is a necessary ingredient for the Mai Tai, but we believe that most home cooks have almond extract on hand instead.
We also nixed the cocktail shaker in favor of a mason jar with a lid. This is so you can make and sip your drink in the same glass, though if you want to make a truer Mai Tai, you need the cocktail shaker's air flow to really add that frothy, whipped texture to the drink.
