What is Southern Coffee Punch?

While the origin of the coffee punch recipes can't be traced, it can be speculated that the recipe got its start at church luncheons when church-goers wanted a sweeter take on the traditional coffee. From there the recipe spread to showers, adding a sweet touch to their brunch or lunch.

Every hostess usually has their own version of the recipe, which has probably been passed down. But we are here to reveal some secrets and let you in on how to make your own Southern coffee punch for your next gathering (be it Christmas or a birthday party). But be warned, this yummy iced coffee isn't for the weak of heart.

To begin, dissolve 1 jar of instant coffee granules and white sugar in boiling water. Cool in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to overnight. Thankfully this is one of those easy recipes you can prep ahead of time for your party.

Right before the party begins, pour the coffee mixture into your punch bowl and add one gallon of milk (2% or whole milk), 1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream, and 1/2 gallon chocolate ice cream. And if you are feeling a little frisky, you can always add in some of your favorite coffee liqueur, like Kahlua, to the punch bowl. Just make sure you let everyone know it's no longer nonalcoholic.
