Drinking alcohol has long been discouraged before bed since, while it may make you sleepy at first, alcoholic beverages actually disturb your sleep cycle in the long run. But there's evidence suggesting that reaching for a glass of vino on your nightstand could help you burn some fat cells. So don't hide that pinot noir anymore. Cuddle with your cabernet proudly. Alcohol consumption may now be part of a balanced diet and healthy habits that promote fat burning.

The study, which was published in 2015 by Washington State University, illustrates that a little bit of red wine (sorry white wine drinkers) before bed can actually help you in losing weight. According to Woman's Day, a compound called resveratrol is responsible for helping you shed the pounds. Resveratrol has been shown to convert "white fat" into "beige fat". Beige fat is a little bit easier to burn off, making it easier to get down to your goal body weight.

Another study, which was conducted by Harvard, found that weight loss and wine go hand-in-hand. Researchers looked at the data between 20,000 women over a range of 13 years and concluded that those who drank two glasses of wine a day were 70% less likely to be overweight.

Why at night? A previous study in 2012 showed that when bees ate a diet supplemented with resveratrol they ate less and they lived longer than the bees who ate a normal diet. While we are not saying humans and bees are exactly alike, we'll take anything that lets us drink a few glasses of red wine with dinner without guilt.

The health experts at the Mayo Clinic also agree that resveratrol, found in a glass of red wine, is great for your heart as well. It helps prevent damage to your blood vessels, prevents blood clots, and can reduce bad cholesterol. And a study in France concluded resveratrol was actually able to slow down the production of cancerous cells.

While there are many health benefits of red wine, it also needs to be said that since it is alcohol, it should be consumed in moderation. Drinking more than two glasses of wine a night could cause weight gain or obesity, instead of losing it, due to the excess calories.

Thankfully, red wine isn't the only place you can find resveratrol. Blueberries, strawberries, and grapes are all natural sources. Make yourself a berry sangria and you are in business!
