Rooted in Country: Russell Dickerson on Keith Urban's 'Somebody Like You'

Country singer-songwriter Russell Dickerson knows a thing or two about penning a feel-good love song. And it's no coincidence. His hit songs "Blue Tacoma" and "Every Little Thing" are the kind of windows-down summer romance anthems Dickerson was raised on.

The "Love You Like I Used To" and "Home Sweet" singer tells Wide Open Country that one of his greatest songwriting inspirations is Keith Urban's "Somebody Like You," from the 2002 album Golden Road.

"I've been a huge fan of [Urban's] music since Golden Road. 'Somebody Like You' came out when I was in high school and had it on repeat 24/7," Dickerson says. "It made me think about how I wanted to make music that makes people feel something different than the last 150 songs they've listened to on the radio."

After earning a Bachelor's degree in music from Belmont University in Nashville, Dickerson released his debut EP Die to Live Again. He's toured with artists such as Canaan Smith, Thomas Rhett, Lady A, Billy Currington and Darius Rucker.

In 2015, Dickerson released his first No. 1 single, "Yours," which he co-wrote with Casey Brown and Parker Welling. The song was named one of the Best Wedding Songs of 2016 by wedding website The Knot.

Dickerson, who made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2016, welcomed his first child, a son named Remington, with his wife Kailey in 2020.

Last year, Dickerson released his second album Southern Symphony, featuring the Florida Georgia Line collaboration "It's About Time."
