Whether you love, loathe or willfully ignore Sam Hunt, few can honestly say they expected to mention him in the same breath as honky-tonk idol Webb Pierce during the buildup to Hunt's sophomore album Southside, out April 3.

New song "Hard to Forget," released Feb. 7, begins with a sample from Pierce's "There Stands the Glass." The 1953 single spent 12 weeks atop the charts--The sort of run that seemed unfathomable before Hunt's 2017 single "Body Like a Backroad" topped the Hot Country Songs chart for a total of 34 weeks.
If you like Hunt, please build on this brief history lesson and scour the internet for your own classic country playlist. If you're in the traditional country music or bust camp, consider yourself "Rick rolled."
A long list of talented Nashville songwriters share credit with Hunt and album co-producer Luke Laird: Ashley Gorley, Audrey Grisham, Josh Osborne, Mary Jean Shurtz, Russ Hull and Shane McAnally. For modern country fans, that's quite the squad. For folks into sharing memes that point out that Beyonce works with numerous co-writers unlike your classic rock favorites, update your troll repertoire accordingly.
"Hard to Forget" joins "Kinfolks" and "Sinning With You" as previews of Hunt's first full-length album since 2014's Montevallo.

"Hard to Forget" Lyrics:
There stands the glass
That relieves all my pain
That will settle my brain
It's my first one to take
There stands the glass
That-that relieves all my pain
That-that will settle my brain
It's-it's my first one to take
Hey
I saw your sister at work
I saw your mama at church
I'm pretty sure I saw your car at the mall
I see your face in the clouds
I smell your perfume in crowds
I swear your number's all my phone wants to call
It's kinda funny how I can't seem
To get away from you
It's almost like you don't want me to
You've got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey but I've got no proof
That you showed up tonight in that dress
Just to mess with my head
So much for so long, out of sight, out of mind
Girl you're looking so good, it's driving me out of mine
Aw you're breaking my heart
Baby you're playing hard to forget
Told me to leave all your things
Out on the porch on the swing
You'd come and grab them by the end of the week
It's just some jeans and a shirt
But it's a whole lot of hurt
I think I know why you've been dragging your feet
Ain't it funny how I can't seem
To get away from you
It's almost like you don't want me to
You've got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey but I've got no proof
That you showed up tonight in that dress
Just to mess with my head
So much for so long, out of sight, out of mind
Girl you're looking so good, it's driving me out of mine
Aw you're breaking my heart
Baby you're playing hard to forget
There stands the glass
That-that relieves all my pain
That-that will settle my brain
It's-it's my first one to take
You've got a cold heart and the cold hard truth
I got a bottle of whiskey but I've got no proof
That you showed up tonight in that dress
Just to mess with my head
So much for so long, out of sight, out of mind
Girl you're looking so good, it's driving me out of mine
Aw you're breaking my heart
Baby you're playing hard to forget
Aw honey I'm falling apart
You're playing hard to forget
