Sturgill Simpson Teams With Kesha on Her New Single, 'Resentment'

Multiple special guests aided pop star Kesha on her raw, vulnerable new single "Resentment," including fellow Nashville rebel Sturgill Simpson.

Simpson joins Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson and pop songwriter Wrabel as collaborators on the new single off the album High Road, out Jan. 31 on RCA/Kemosabe Records.

"Resentment is such a powerful and destructive emotion and in my experience is more complex than hate or anger," says Kesha in a statement quoted by Pitchfork.

Kesha went on to describe Simpson as someone "I respect and admire so much" whose contributions made the single feel "more like a dream than just another song to me."

Other crossovers with the worlds of Americana, roots and country music we know about include the gospel vibes of "Raising Hell," which happens to be co-written by frequent Thomas Rhett collaborator Sean Douglas. Beyond that, the song "Kinky" probably isn't about Friedman, and "The Potato Song (Cuz I Want To)" won't necessarily celebrate American popular music's Irish roots.

In all seriousness, Kesha's Simpson team-up follows a cover of Dolly Parton's "Old Flames (Can't Hold a Candle To You)," featuring Dolly herself and appearing on the 2017 album Rainbow. Kesha's mom Pebe Sebert wrote "Old Flames" as well as songs cut over the years by Crystal Gayle and Kathy Mattea.
