Classic Episodes of Supermarket Sweep Are Now on Netflix

I loved staying home from school when I was younger when I was sick. My mom would make me Campbell's chicken soup for lunch paired with Ritz crackers, I could lounge in my pajamas all day, and best of all, I got to watch daytime gameshows. Supermarket Sweep was one of my favorites and even as an elementary school student, I dreamed of the day I could be on the show and participate in the "Big Sweep". Now I can relive my childhood dreams and watch classic Supermarket Sweep episodes on Netflix.

What is Supermarket Sweep?

Originally broadcast on ABC from December 1965 to July 1967, the classic game show was recorded at various Food Fair supermarkets around the New York City Area. The show was rebooted on Lifetime February 1990, to June 1995, and from April 2000, to May 2003 (with reruns on PAX tv).

Each reboot of the tv game show followed the same format. In essence, teams compete in trivia question rounds to build their timer. At the end of the round, the team took part in the Big Sweep where they ran around the grocery store and picked up items, trying to build up their total. The contestants with the highest total got to take home cash prizes and participate in a bonus round called the Bonus Sweep where teams could win an additional $5,000.

Supermarket Sweep Reboot Coming Soon

A few months ago we broke the news that ABC is bringing back the iconic game show that will be hosted by Saturday Night Live veteran Leslie Jones, who also sits as the executive producer. The network and Fremantle media has yet to announce when the tv show will be airing, but we are hoping it'll be sooner than later, pending coronavirus.

"I've always dreamed of being on 'Supermarket Sweep'," Jones said in a statement. "Seriously, I tried out for the show years ago; and after getting turned away, I knew I'd have to take matters into my own hands. Being able to bring the iconic game show back to life on ABC is my ultimate redemption story!"

The original version can be streamed on Amazon Prime and now, Netflix.
