5. Seminole Canyon State Historical Park

Located in Comstock, Texas, Seminole Canyon State Park offers camping, hiking and mountain biking. But the biggest draw to the gorgeous park is the ancient drawings on Seminole Canyon.

Seminole Canyon State Park has 46 campsites, which range from primitive camps to sites with water and electricity.

4. Colorado Bend State Park

Located two hours northwest of Austin, Colorado Bend State Park is a must-see for avid Texas campers. Beat the heat by taking a dip in Spicewood Springs and spend the afternoon hiking or taking a cave tour.  And of course you can't miss the stunning wonder that is Gorman Falls.

When parking is full, the park closes for up to four hours so be sure to call or check the park's Facebook page before making the trip.

3. Goose Island State Park

If a Gulf breeze is a requirement for your Texas camping trip, look no further than Goose Island State Park. Located north of Corpus Christi along the St. Charles and Aransas bays, Goose Island is a fisherman's paradise.  The park offers 44 campsites on the bay and 57 campsites under the oak trees that line the grounds.

Speaking of trees, you can't leave Goose Island without staring in awe at "The Big Tree," a 1,000-year-old oak that's one of the largest and oldest oak trees in the nation.

2. Palmetto State Park

Palmetto State Park is a hidden gem about halfway between Austin and San Antonio in Gonzales, Texas. Spend the long weekend canoeing on the San Marcos River or tubing in Oxbow Lake.

1. Padre Island National Seashore

What better way to spend a long weekend than on the beach? Padre Island National Seashore offers a relaxing getaway of sunbathing and bird-watching with five different campgrounds on the park grounds. Camping is first-come, first-served, so be sure to get there early.
