At a time when social media saturation makes some celebrity couples seem downright phony, it remains easy enough to view Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's relationship as a country music marriage made in heaven. McGraw and Hill beam happiness in public, dating back to their 1996 wedding. Yet their music video for the title track of duet album The Rest of Our Life fronts no fairy tale.
Instead, a countryside limousine ride for McGraw and Hill sparks an argument. With neither side budging, Hill runs away in the rain to avoid further conflict. It captures the misunderstandings that happen in any relationship. Neither one looks all that aggravated, which works here because not all marital spats resemble full-on shouting matches. In the end, McGraw finds Hill in a tiny diner, and they live happily ever after. It's a beautiful story of true love overcoming the small spats that come with over two decades of togetherness.
The song tells a similar story, with McGraw not worrying that a few gray hairs might compromise "'til death do us part." Musically, the Ed Sheeran co-write owes more to soul and R&B's pasts than classic country music. When McGraw and Hill harmonize, it's more Boyz II Men than Johnny and June.
Despite the massive success of their 1997 collaboration "It's Your Love," McGraw and Hill just now combined their talents for a duet album. The couple announced the album title and unveiled its title track on Oct. 6, their 21st wedding anniversary.
Additional tracks include co-writes by pop star Meghan Trainor and veteran songwriter Lori McKenna, the woman behind McGraw's Grammy-winning 2016 hit "Humble and Kind."
The Rest of Our Life arrives Nov. 17 via McGraw's new label home, Arista Nashville. In the meantime, the couple's Soul2Soul Tour's North American leg continues through October.
