According to the New Mexico Department of Health, three people have died from methanol poisoning in hand sanitizer. An additional three people are in critical condition and another is permanently blind. NMDOH believes all seven people drank hand sanitizer containing methanol.

The original article continues below:

The sale of hand sanitizers has skyrocketed these past few months due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Stores had to set product limits on them, and at one point many distillers (including my local gin distillery Chemist Spirits) were making hand sanitizers to give to customers. However, the FDA has recently reported that consumers should not use hand sanitizer made by Eskbiochem SA de CV in Mexico because it may contain methanol, which can be toxic when ingested or absorbed into the skin. Substantial methanol exposure from toxic hand sanitizers can cause nausea, vomiting, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system, and even death, according to the FDA.

Do Not Buy These Toxic Hand Sanitizers

The Food and Drug Administration has listed the affected hand sanitizer products below:

  • All-Clean Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-002-01)
  • Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-007-01)
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-008-04)
  • Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-006-01)
  • The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-010-10)
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-005-03)
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-009-01)
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-003-01)
  • Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-001-01)

According to samples from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Lavar Gel contains 81 percent methanol and no ethyl alcohol. The FDA has contacted the company and recommended that they remove the products from the market, however Eskbiochem "has not taken action to remove these potentially dangerous products from the market," officials share.

People who are at high risk for poisoning include young children who accidentally ingest the product and "adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute"

Customers should dispose of these immediately in the appropriate hazardous waste containers.
