'White Liar': The Story Behind Miranda Lambert's Small Town Scandal

Small town stories and country music always seem to work perfectly together. When Miranda Lambert and her friend Natalie Hemby sat down to write 'White Liar,' they knew this combination would make the song a country hit. The song, as well as the story in the music video, is about a woman calling out her fiance on their wedding day for cheating -- come to find out in the bridge, she's been cheating too -- with the best man.

Hemby, who has also written for names like Little Big Town, Maren Morris, Carrie Underwood, and Kacey Musgraves, had the title 'White Liar' in her queue, and Lambert loved it. They sat down and wrote the song in less than 20 minutes. The two co-wrote four of the songs on the album and have since written some of Lambert's biggest hits: 'Bluebird,' 'Automatic,' and 'Only Prettier,' to name a few.

'White Liar' was Lambert's second single off of her album Revolution. Upon its release, she performed the song on The Ellen Degeneres Show and the 2009 CMA Awards. It was her second song to go Top 10 on the Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart and her first single to go Top 40 on the Hot 100. The single also received three ACM Awards nominations: Single of the Year, Song of the Year, and Video of the Year (winner). Revolution won Album of the Year that same year.

'White Liar' Lyrics:

Hey white liar the truth comes out a little at a time
And it spreads just like a fire
Slips off of your tongue like turpentine
And I don't know why white liar

You better be careful what you do
I wouldn't wanna be in your shoes
If they ever found you out
You better be careful what you say
It never really added up anyway
I got friends in this town

Hey white liar the truth comes out a little at a time
And it spreads just like a fire
Slips off of your tongue like turpentine
And I don't know why white liar

You said you went out to a bar
And walked some lady to her car
But your face has more to tell
'Cause my cousin saw you on the street with a redhead named Bernice
turns out you don't lie too well

Hey white liar the truth comes out a little at a time
And it spreads just like a fire slips off of your tongue like turpentine
And I don't know why white liar
Here's a bombshell just for you
Turns out I've been lying too
Yeah, I'm a white liar. The truth comes out a little at a time
And it spreads just like a fire slips off of my tongue like turpentine
And I don't know why White liar
